San Marcos River Foundation Awards at Annual Meeting, 2010


 

The annual meeting of members in February 2010 offered the opportunity to elect new board members and give awards.   The San Marcos River  Foundation elected two new board members, Ann Allen and Carissa  Belsky, and re-elected two of the current board members for second  terms:  Dr. Allen Groeger and Betty Watkins.  The nine member volunteer board is elected on a rotating basis for three year terms.

SMRF gave two awards at this annual meeting, pictured below. Other awards given at the meeting were from the San Marcos River Rangers, the volunteer water testing monitors who test many sites on the river.

Friend of the River

Jo Secrest, left, receives the "Friend of the River" Award for environmental stewardship from Board President Michelle Bussemey. Jo has been instrumental in implementing hazardous waste disposal events and recycling in San Marcos, working as a dedicated staff person for the City of San Marcos which sponsors these practices.

 

River Writer

John Hohn, right, receives the "San Marcos River Writer" award from Board President Michelle Bussemey. John wrote The Millennium Tuber, a book based on a newspaper column first written in 2000 about tubing the river every week for a full year, with detailed observations about the conditions in the river that year.

Mike and Carol Rhoades, who have monitored Thompson Island since 2004, receive the 2009 San Marcos River Ranger of the Year from Rachel Sanborn


 

The San Marcos River Foundation (SMRF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation founded in 1985 during the Sesquicentennial celebration for the community by a small group of San Marcos citizens with a mission to preserve and protect the flow, natural beauty and purity of the San Marcos River.
